Floral Pendant Lamp

They say lighting should be the earrings on a room, and I knew I wanted to attempt a DIY pendant light for my kitchen! I’ve had these french floral-looking lights on my Pinterest board for years and it actually ended up being a much simpler, cost-efficient (less than $80) project than anticipated!

Fabric (5 years)

Round Rattan

Gold paint

Copper pipe

Electrical kit

Wire

Gorilla glue

How To

Step 1

Cut eight pieces of round rattan to around 104 cm each with scissors.

(You can shorten or lengthen based on your desired size).

Step 2

Soak in water for one hour.

The rattan will arrive in a spiral so soaking it will unravel it again and make it pliable. Then pat it dry.

Step 3

Glue ends together.

Glue ends with gorilla glue. I wrapped in a soft tape to hold it while it dried – you could also clip them together.

Step 4

Use books or other heavy objects to gently press the reed into the shape you want and let sit for a few hours.

Step 5

While the reed dried, I cut 8 pieces of copper pipe to around 5 inches long with my Dremel, which will be used for the “stems”.

(The leftover copper I ended up using in a later step!)

Step 6

(Optional) The lighting wire kit I ordered from IKEA was beige so I painted it gold. I had leftover rub n’ buff to use but if you are buying new I highly recommend spray paint instead. I also applied it to the copper tubes so they would all be the same shade.

Step 7

Glue the reed to the fabric by carefully lining the entire petal with gorilla glue. Place books on top to hold down and leave for a few hours or overnight.

Step 8

Cut the petal out, as close as you can along the edge of the reed. Take your time here - I found it was better to get it right the first time then to keep trimming.

Step 9

Slide the copper tube over the end. Take a piece of aluminum wire (around 12 in) and slide it through the tube and wrap the end around to secure it. We will use the other side to wrap around the light fixture.

Step 10

Wrap each wire around the light fixture. Note: my light fixture was soft so I had to slide the extra piece of copper metal over it before wrapping the wires around it to keep everything steady.

Step 11

Hang and arrange your petals so that they are counterbalanced. :)
