DIY TV Frame

For the longest time I debated, should we just let TV’s be TV’s? And then I came back to my roots and decided such a large eye-catching piece should have some ornamental value. Function and beauty. So I finally joined the frame TV club and my only regret is not doing it sooner. And it cost me less than $45!

How To

Step 1

Get supplies. The trim I bought has a ‘lip’ or ‘bevel’ on the underside that keeps it from moving when you press it to the tv.

If you get flat trim without this, you will need to create a bevel by securing a second piece of wood to the back.

Step 2

Measure outside edges of tv. You will cut your trim pieces so that measurements you just took of your tv match the cut of the INSIDE edge of the trim. If reversed, your cut will be too short.

This confused me a bit, but it’s really just that since we are cutting at each edge at a 45 degree angle, the outside will technically be longer than the inside. You just have to make sure that when you start cutting, it’s the inside edge.

I recommend adding a buffer of a few inches at least for your first cut to make sure you have it right. This is a pain if using a miter box as it’s lengthy process to keep adjusting, but worth it so you don’t have to go back to the store for more trim.

Step 3

Lightly sand edges if needed. Glue corners together with wood glue and let sit overnight. Then drill on corner brackets.

Step 4

Staple or nail on elastic to the corners for so that you can secure it to the tv.

Step 5

Paint the frame black first to create depth and appearance of “age”.

Step 6

Paint gold with Rub N’ Buff. I used Antique Gold, and let a bit of black show through.

Note: I had the hardest time finding this in store in the city! Blick had it but Michael’s and Joann’s did not.

Voila!

You can slip your frame over the tv. You can find frame tv images on YouTube - just make sure they switch out somewhat frequently as leaving one image on the tv can burn into it.
